Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef 85/15 blend for flavor
  • 1 medium Green cabbage About 2 lbs, thinly sliced
  • 2 medium Carrots Sliced diagonally
  • 1 large Yellow onion Diced
  • 4 cloves Garlic Minced fresh
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh ginger Grated
  • 3 tablespoon Soy sauce Regular or low sodium
  • 0.5 cup Beef broth Quality broth preferred
  • 1 tablespoon Sesame oil For authentic flavor
  • 2 tablespoon Olive oil For cooking
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Plus more to taste
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper Freshly ground
  • 0.25 teaspoon Red pepper flakes Optional for heat
  • 2 tablespoon Green onions Sliced, for garnish
  • 1 tablespoon Sesame seeds For garnish

Equipment

  • 12 inch large skillet Or wok for stir fry style cooking
  • Sharp chef's knife Essential for slicing cabbage thin
  • Large cutting board For prepping vegetables
  • Wooden spoon For breaking up ground beef
  • Slotted spoon For transferring cooked beef
  • Box grater For fresh ginger
  • Measuring cups For liquids and ingredients
  • Measuring spoons For seasonings

Method

  1. Heat olive oil in large skillet over medium high heat. Add ground beef, break into small crumbles and cook 5 to 7 minutes until browned. Season with salt and pepper. Transfer to plate with slotted spoon
  2. In same skillet, add diced onion and sliced carrots. Cook 3 to 4 minutes until onions are translucent. Add minced garlic and grated ginger, stir 30 seconds until fragrant
  3. Add sliced cabbage to skillet in batches, stirring as it wilts. Cook 5 to 7 minutes until tender but still has slight bite
  4. Return browned beef to skillet with vegetables. Stir to distribute evenly throughout
  5. Pour in soy sauce, beef broth and sesame oil. Toss everything to coat thoroughly
  6. Let mixture simmer 3 to 5 minutes so flavors meld and sauce reduces slightly to perfect consistency
  7. Taste and add more salt, pepper, or soy sauce as needed. Add red pepper flakes if using
  8. Remove from heat and let rest 2 minutes so flavors settle
  9. Sprinkle with sliced green onions and sesame seeds for presentation
  10. Serve immediately while hot, directly from skillet or in individual bowls
