A condensation-covered rocks glass filled with a stunning deep violet and magenta Jamaican Purple Rain cocktail packed with crushed ice, garnished with a bright red maraschino cherry and a fresh pineapple wedge on the rim, placed on a wooden serving board with dark cherries scattered alongside, against a warm golden bokeh background with a blurred pineapple visible behind.

Jamaican Purple Rain Cocktail

A vivid violet-purple tropical cocktail built with Jamaican dark rum, Blue Curacao, pineapple juice, and cranberry juice over crushed ice. The cranberry is added last over a bar spoon so the red pigment disperses through the blue Curacao and creates the saturated purple color. Garnished with a pineapple wedge and maraschino cherry. Ready in under 10 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Jamaican dark rum Distinguishes this from a standard Purple Rain; carries molasses-rich tropical depth vodka does not
  • 1 oz Blue Curacao Primary color contributor; turns purple-violet when it contacts the red cranberry pigment
  • 2 oz pineapple juice, cold The tropical sweetness that rounds the citrus edge of the Blue Curacao; use cold for best chill
  • 1 oz cranberry juice Added LAST over a bar spoon after the glass is built; its red pigment shifts the Blue Curacao to purple
  • ½ oz fresh lime juice Sharpens the tropical flavor and prevents the drink tasting one-dimensional
  • ½ oz simple syrup Adjustable; reduce or eliminate if the pineapple juice is already very sweet
  • crushed ice Fills the glass firmly above the rim; shows the purple color clearly through the transparent glass
  • 1 fresh pineapple wedge for garnish Rested at an inward angle on the rim with the yellow flesh facing upward as shown in the image
  • 1 maraschino cherry for garnish Bright red with stem, placed directly in front of the pineapple wedge on the rim

Equipment

  • 1 cocktail shaker with tight-fitting lid At least 16 oz capacity; must seal firmly during vigorous shaking
  • 1 Hawthorne strainer or fine-mesh strainer For straining the shaken cocktail cleanly over the crushed ice
  • 1 bar spoon or regular teaspoon Held bowl-side down above ice for the slow cranberry pour that creates the color
  • 1 highball glass (12 oz minimum) Straight-sided clear glass shows the purple color without distortion as in the image
  • 1 jigger or measuring spoons For accurate spirit and juice quantities
  • 1 each small sharp knife and cutting board For cutting the pineapple wedge garnish with the skin on

Method

  1. Select a highball glass with at least 12 oz capacity and place it in the freezer for 3 to 5 minutes so the exterior frosts slightly; cut a 1 cm pineapple wedge with skin on and make a small slit through the flesh to the skin so it can hang over the rim, and set the maraschino cherry and pineapple wedge within arm's reach before building the drink.
  2. Fill a cocktail shaker with a full handful of ice and add the Jamaican dark rum, Blue Curacao, pineapple juice, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup in that order; do NOT add the cranberry juice to the shaker — it is reserved for the final pour step.
  3. Seal the shaker tightly and shake vigorously for 12 to 15 seconds until the exterior feels cold and frosted; the mixture is properly chilled and diluted when the shaker is uncomfortably cold to hold with bare hands for more than a few seconds.
  4. Fill the chilled highball glass with crushed ice packed firmly above the rim so the liquid fills the spaces between the ice pieces and the color shows through clearly, then strain the shaken cocktail slowly over the packed ice so the liquid distributes evenly from the top downward.
  5. Hold a bar spoon bowl-side down just above the ice surface and pour the cranberry juice slowly over the back of the spoon so it flows gently down the side of the glass and disperses through the Blue Curacao mixture from the top; watch the vivid violet-purple color develop within 10 to 15 seconds as the red pigment combines with the blue throughout the drink.
  6. Do not stir the drink after the cranberry is added; allow the color to develop and equalize naturally through the ice for 15 to 20 seconds so the finished glass looks like the deep, saturated purple of the image rather than a partially mixed two-tone drink.
  7. Slide the prepared pineapple wedge onto the rim at a slight inward angle with the yellow flesh facing upward, then place the maraschino cherry by its stem directly against the pineapple wedge at the front of the glass so both garnishes are centered and visible from the front as shown in the image.
  8. Serve immediately on a wooden board or clean surface with 2 to 3 extra cherries and a whole pineapple in the background arrangement as shown in the image; offer a wide straw inserted at the back of the glass so the front garnish arrangement remains undisturbed when the drink is consumed.

Notes

Do not add the cranberry juice to the shaker; add it as the final pour over the back of a bar spoon after the shaken mixture is already over the ice. This is what creates the vivid, saturated purple rather than a murky mixed color. Use crushed ice for the clearest color visibility through the glass. Serve immediately; the ice melts quickly and the color fades as it dilutes.
